How to Use Matcha Powder

To use Matcha powder

To use Matcha powder, sift about a teaspoon into a bowl, add a small amount of hot water (around 80°C, but not boiling) to form a paste, and then whisk it vigorously in a zig-zag or "W" motion until a frothy foam appears. Add more hot water or steamed milk to the mixture and whisk again to incorporate it before serving.

Traditional Method

  1. Sift 1 to 2 scoops (or about ½ to ¾ teaspoon) of high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha powder into a bowl or mug to remove clumps.
  2. Add a small amount of hot water (about 1 ounce or 30-50 ml) that is just under boiling (around 80°C).
  3. Whisk the mixture into a smooth, thick paste using a bamboo whisk (chasen).
  4. Continue whisking in a "W" or zig-zag motion until the tea becomes frothy.
  5. Add the remaining hot water or steamed milk to the paste.
  6. Whisk again until the foam is evenly distributed and the drink is smooth.
  7. Enjoy immediately.

Alternative Methods

  • Electric Whisk/Frother: Place the matcha powder and hot water in a mug, insert an electric handheld whisk, and whisk in an up-and-down motion for 15-20 seconds until a fluffy texture is created.
  • Jar Method: For a quick alternative, add matcha powder and hot water to a jar, close the lid, and shake vigorously to combine.

Tips for Best Results

  • Sifting is crucial for a smooth, clump-free drink.
  • Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) for the best frothy texture.
  • Avoid boiling water, as it can scald the matcha and give it a bitter taste.
  • Sifted matcha that creates a foamy layer is a sign of high-quality matcha powder.
